World Vision appeal reaches $1 million for Myanmar
Thank you so much to our supporters who have given donations to help the people in Myanmar following Cyclone Nargis. New Zealanders have shown great generosity, donating more than $1,000,000 to World Vision's emergency appeal.
"We had been afraid that the current economic recession in New Zealand may slow the level of generosity," says Lisa Cescon, CEO of World Vision New Zealand. "Instead, we have been surprised by the level of compassion that Kiwis have shown. I think people understand that even though things are tough on them, it's much worse in Myanmar and as such, respond with enormous kindness. New Zealanders can be really proud of themselves for this."
The devastation of Cyclone Nargis has resulted in hundreds of thousands of people losing their homes and loved ones. One month on from the devastation, affected communities are finding the resilience to survive and rebuild with assistance from aid agencies and local organisations.
Because of World Vision's 40-year history working in Myanmar, we were immediately allowed access to those in need and had control of the distribution of our aid. The whole humanitarian community has seen an increase in access for staff and supplies since the agreement between UN, ASEAN and the government of Myanmar, but still faces challenges in scaling up the response.
To date, World Vision has concentrated on the immediate needs of survivors, with food, shelter, clean water and child protection among the main priorities. Despite the difficulties in reaching some affected areas, World Vision has provided assistance to over 250,000 people, and hopes to reach nearly half a million with relief and rehabilitation over the next three years.
The people of Myanmar, devastated by this cyclone are just beginning their road to recovery. World Vision is committed to providing long-term assistance and working alongside the people of Myanmar to help them through this disaster and to rebuild their lives.
