World Vision New Zealand has set up a simple process to enable kiwi
farmers to help other rural people who desperately need assistance.
How you can help
It's a simple process that World Vision New Zealand has set up to enable
you to use your cull cow, or cows, to help someone else who desperately
needs your assistance.
When you send your cull cows off to the works simply paint the letters
"WV" on every cow you choose to give, and World Vision will receive
the funds from that cow. Money from your cull cow will then go to agricultural
projects in countries such as India, Cambodia and Zambia.
In some cases the New Zealand Government will match-fund World Vision
projects overseas -so your gift often goes further.
World Vision will send you a receipt to use for tax purposes. You'll also
receive a report describing the progress of agricultural
projects funded through this unique scheme.
How does it work?
Cow dung and water are mixed in a specially designed underground tank
generating methane gas. This is used for easy cooking and lighting, reducing
the need to cut down trees for firewood.
How much?
The cost of a complete Biogas system is NZ$300.
Funds from your cull cow go a long way. Your gift will set
up a family with Biogas and set them on the road
to a better way of life.
Benefits
Environmentally responsible.
Match-funded 'one-to-one' by the Indian Government.
Girls can go to school as they no longer need to spend long hours
collecting firewood.
Forests saved from felling, preventing erosion.
Families have an efficient no-cost fuel.
Communities become self-sufficient, reducing their reliance on outside aid.
How does it work?
A cow is lent by the cow bank to a family in desperate need. The cow
is kept until it has produced two calves, then it is returned for someone
else to borrow. The family keeps the calves and raises them for milk, to
plough rice fields and begin a herd of their own.
How much?
A cow can cost up to NZ$750. For families of the Oudong community in
Cambodia, for example, this figure can represent their
annual income. It is impossible for them to buy a cow at this price so
a family would normally hire an animal to plough their land.
This is where you can help. On average, proceeds from a cull cow will
buy one cow for the cow bank, which in turn provides up to three families
with the beginnings of a herd. It will also provide the family with basic
training on animal health, ensuring the cows are properly cared for.
Benefits
Ploughing by cow, not by hand, boosts food production.
Breeding more cows to sell increases income.
Increased profit margin from farm production.
