Four-year-old Hortense had been hungry for as long as she could remember. Her grandmother has been looking after her with all the love and care she could, but when conflict came to their village in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they were forced to flee their home.
Hortense was already severely malnourished, and now she and her grandmother were struggling to survive after leaving everything they’d ever known behind.
Her grandmother was forced to beg for food for Hortense, but it was never enough.
That’s when caring
Childhood Rescue supporters stepped up with a practical gift of hope – just in time.
Because of compassionate New Zealanders like you, Bénédicte, a World Vision nutritionist, was making home visits to check on neighbouring children in the community. She spotted Hortense and knew straight away that she needed help.
Immediately, Hortense and her grandma were taken to hospital, where Hortense received emergency food and treatment. Without it, her severe malnutrition could have been fatal.
Hortense continued to receive special therapeutic food and care at the local health centre to help her make a full recovery. This health centre is running thanks to the kindness of people like you.
It’s made a world of difference for Hortense. Today, she is healthy and strong. Just look at that smile!
Families of children who go through our nutrition programme join care groups, where women learn how to cook nutrition-packed food using low-cost, local ingredients to keep their children safe from malnutrition.
Over the last 10 years, 9 out of 10 severely malnourished children treated through World Vision have made a full recovery. And it’s only possible thanks to the kindness of people like you.
