Celebrating our youth-led campaign for stronger climate finance commitments

The Advocacy & Schools and Youth teams are so excited to share our recent handover event was a huge success, bringing together rangatahi from across the country and marking a significant moment in our Climate Finance Campaign. Our Advocacy Ambassadors met with MPs from across political parties, each MP personally received some of the 2,000 postcards from New Zealand children and young people. These postcards represent the voices of rangatahi from across Aotearoa, each sharing a personal message on why climate action is so important to them. This handover event serves as a powerful endorsement of the World Vision and Oxfam Climate Finance Report by the World Vision Advocacy Ambassadors.

In addition, our Advocacy Ambassadors had the chance to meet with National MP Greg Fleming to discuss his Crimes Increased Penalties for Slavery Offences Bill, set for its first reading that evening, as well as the importance of Modern Slavery Legislation. This was a great opportunity to reinforce our call for the Government to publicly commit to introducing modern slavery legislation before the year’s end. The Advocacy Ambassadors also loved attending the Hīkoi and the UNICEF Children’s Day breakfast- three trips to Parliament in just two days!

A massive thank you to the Advocacy Ambassadors for their creation of, and dedication to this campaign! Dinithi Liyange, Evelyn Paynter, Connor Thompson, Heather Hills, Pahul Parmar, Lin Swe Hlaing, Rebecca Huang, Caitlin Sim, Talia MacKinnon, Aurora Chen, Jack Gormley, Lily Melville, Rose Farr, Georgia Moynihan, Amy Charman-Moore and Matilda Ellis.

A huge shout-out to our Advocacy Ambassadors for delivering such inspiring speeches and ensuring the voices of our rangatahi are heard loud and clear! Kudos to Queen Margaret College and Oaklands School students for reading postcards and bringing children's voices to the event too!

COP29 is now over, and we have a new climate finance global goal of USD 300 billion (or NZD 444 billion) by 2035. With a new climate finance global goal established, New Zealand has an opportunity to stand with frontline communities for a fairer, safer future by scaling up its current climate finance contributions and developing a clear plan to meet its fair share of the updated target by 2035.

World Vision is calling our government to:
  • Scale-up climate finance to NZ$558 million by 2025, meeting New Zealand’s obligations under the original US$100 billion goal.
  • Double climate finance by 2030 to NZ$1.12 billion, ensuring steady progress toward the global goal.
  • Develop a clear plan to meet New Zealand’s fair share of the updated US$300 billion target, (at least NZ$1.7 billion) by 2035.
